Preventing Sports Injuries In Kids

      The role of the Chiropractor is crucial in preventing sports injuries in children. Prior to any sports involvement, the child should undergo a Pre-Participation Evaluation (PPE). The PPE consists of a routine medical history and physical examination with emphasis on a neuromusculoskeletal evaluation, all of which is helpful in determining the readiness factor of the child for the sport in question.  This “Toes to Nose” examination includes chiropractic examinations, as well as orthopedic neurologic testing.  It has been my experience that discovering and correcting poor posture, muscle imbalances, and nerve interference will reduce chances for injury.
     As the child begins sports participation, our doctors can offer guidelines on exercise, conditioning and stretching techniques, nutrition and general fitness. Of course, when treatment is needed, our doctors are fully equipped to manage non-surgical treatment of typical sports injuries. Our doctors are able to recognize certain injuries because of their extensive education, experience and training.  If necessary a referral to a specialist can be made.
Although parents may not be able to soften the blow from an athletic injury they can minimize serious injury by taking some basic preventative measures:
  1. Determine the child's physical maturation level and match the child's size with an appropriate sport. Most competitive children's sports are organized according to chronological age rather than physical skill or maturation. Slower maturing children are often at greater risk of injury because they are competing with peers who may be larger and physically more developed.
  2. Have your child be examined from “Toes to Nose.”This examination is important because it will detect imbalance, poor posture and nerve interference that once corrected will reduce chance of injury and increase performance.
  3. Seek professional advice. Given the fact that children will get hurt in play, it is critical that parents use good judgment in treating complaints about pain. What may act like a simple sprain may actually be a growth plate injury, which is very common in youth sports, that demands professional diagnosis on the extent of the injury and how to proceed with treatment.

​​The question often arises over and over again…should I still continue to come for regular adjustments even if I don’t have pain?  Well, I am glad you asked. I would personally agree with getting regular chiropractic adjustments because I have been receiving maintenance adjustments for years now.  I have only had low back pain with my occasional accidents.  Pain should never be the controlling factor of why you return to get adjusted. Your nervous system is made up of over seventy-five miles of nerves and the nerve impulses can be as fast as three hundred and fifty miles per hour.   Only 10% of your body registers pain and 90% controls functions like breathing, digesting, thinking and eliminating.  In the last moment of the pressure on a nerve will you feel the pain, but well before that pressure your bodily functions will be affected and decreased. Would you rather just feel good and be out of pain or be healthy.  The first symptom of some who is having a heart attack can be death. Prior to that heart attack, that person felt good. Again I cannot stress how important it is to have your nervous system functioning at 100%.  How often do I check my family?  I check and adjust my family about 1-2 times per week. Why would I do any less for you and your family? 
       I have been going to my dentist for approximately twenty-five years now.  He has taught me very well the good habits of brushing and flossing.  I still to this day have my teeth checked three times a year for maintenance cleaning.  
Since I started driving I have been having my car checked every 3,000 miles. Why would you not want your nervous system to run at its optimum peak for the entire life?  How long would your car last if you only tuned it up when the engine started smoking or the oil light came on?  
     When it comes to your health and nervous system, it should be your number one priority with your family.  As I have learned through years of experience, “teeth and an engine can be replaced, but it can never be as good as the original.”  
     What is more expensive, Pain care or Maintenance care? Say that you have 2 flair ups a year and need 25 adjustments to stabilize your spine.  This is also compounded with all the excruciating pain and the possibility of lost days from work.  The other option is to get maintenance adjustments at 1 to 2 times a month and have your full ability expressed at all times.  You make the choice.  Health is your responsibility and you do have a choice to keep you family’s nervous system always operating at 100%.  We hope to see you and your family for a regular tune up.

Headaches

To many people headaches are just something that they get once in a while, but to all to many people headaches are something that they have learned to live with as part of their everyday life.  Headaches can vary from a mild annoyance to debilitating.  Many of these sufferers take several medications to function or take several medications and still don't function. They spend days in the dark avoiding family, friends and fun.

What can a chiropractor do for people who are suffering with these severe headaches?  Often there are structural problems that occur in the neck due to injury, repetitive use and posture or even a congenital problem. Some of these structural problems can lead to instability in the neck region. This in turn can lead to muscle dysfunction and tension as well as problems with the transmission of nervous system signals.  A chiropractor will adjust the fixated areas giving releif to headaches and helping to restore normal function to neck region.  Your chiropractor will  also discuss rehabilitation options to prevent further injury and prevent future headaches.

Low Back Pain

One of the most common ailments of modern society is lower back pain.  You might ask your self what causes this and what can I do to keep my back healthy?  There are many reasons that the US population has low back pain ranging from previous injury to sedentary lifestyle. Everybody is concerned about getting abs of steel, but few people are  thinking about those postural muscles that are keeping their backs strong and preventing injury to the area.  These muscles should be 3 times as strong as those abdominal muscles.

So what can you do if you are one of the millions of people suffering with low back pain?  According to many new studies chiropractic care is the going to be the most beneficial first option. Your chiropractor will adjust you to relieve the pain and get your spine moving like it needs to be.  After the initial pain management phase,  your chiropractor will work with you to find a good rehab program to get you healthy and keep you healthy. Remember your health care is up to you!

What is the difference between a diet and purification?

Fad diets are everywhere you look these days, but do they work?  Most fad diets do help with weight loss for the time that you are following them, but then what?  A fad diet causes you to lose weight but most of the time it is by eating a prepackaged food that just eliminates calories, but does not nourish. This is an ok short term solution, but what happens in the long run?

Over time most people on any of these fad diets regain the weight they lost plus some.  Why is this? Most people who are on a "diet" have an end point in mind. They think that when they lose 15 or 20 pounds or reach a size 10 they get to stop.  These diets never correct the issue that starts the weight gain in the first place.  They never teach you about making good food choices, or even cutting down on bad choices.   

How is a purification different?  Purification uses whole foods and whole food supplements to help your body purify and rebuild itself. It also supports the function of the body by supporting all of the organ systems that help eliminate and detoxify.   It teaches you what foods are going to bring you health.  I am not saying that you should never again have convenience foods or sweets or caffeine but your good choices should outweigh the bad ones.  When you have released some of the toxic load you can feel the difference of using a natural food source versus an altered food source and if you listen your body will tell you exactly what it wants.

Toxic Overload

Weight Loss

With the summer dwindling away and the chill of fall in the air many of us are thinking about how we did not reach our resolutions for 2013 to lose weight.  We start the year out with good intentions of eating right and losing weight so that when the summer comes we will not only be able to be more active, but will look good in our bathing suits.  This time of year is very discouraging for so many who did not get to meet their goals for the year.   This is a great time of year to take control of your body and reach your goals, there is never a better time then now to take charge of your body and your life. You can make small, but significant, changes like adding vegetables to each meal, or getting up and moving even if it is just during commercials.
